Northumberland has a strong sense of independence, reflected in its people, its landscapes, its commerce and its food. We know that visitors to the county want to enjoy an authentic, distinctive experience during their stay, and this includes tasting our amazing local produce. That’s why we encourage ‘eating out’ establishments to promote local food wherever possible, for all its flavour, freshness and fantastic diversity. It’s really important for our tourism economy that we raise awareness of local food and drink, encouraging it to be put onto guests’ tables at every opportunity, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We know that some self-catering visitors may be more inclined to stock up with their week’s provisions before they come or at the nearest supermarket, rather than sample the delights of the county’s finest cuisine. We need to persuade these visitors to think, act and shop local – to leave their food shopping until they arrive in Northumberland, and head instead for local farmers markets, farm shops, delicatessens and local food providers. Self-catering cottage owners could even advise visitors about where they can shop for local produce, long before they arrive. Through our ‘Made In Northumberland’ website (www.made-in-northumberland.co.uk) we try to stimulate relationships between tourism businesses and suppliers of locally sourced food and drink.

G & S Organics , Alnwick is run by Beth Sutherland and Lee Gray.

They can prepare and deliver a bespoke Organic Holiday Hamper to your holiday home just before or during your stay with Coastal Retreats. Generally the hamper would include organic bacon and/or sausages, organic free range eggs, organic milk, organic fruit and vegetables. All the meat and eggs are raised and processed at Rock Midstead by Beth and Lee, a lot of fruit and vegetables they grow themselves and others are sourced locally.
