Fisherman's Retreat
Sleeps 6 Bedrooms 3 Bathrooms 1 Location - Seahouses

Fully renovated 5 star graded, this 17th Century grain store in the oldest part of Seahouses, where the old smokeries and herring yards once stood. With sea views from the entrance, stunning interior design, original features and great location, it makes a perfect coastal hide away. Everything is on the doorstep, with the harbour and the boats to the Farne Islands, within a minutes walk.
We took on Fisherman's Retreat as a derelict property in the winter of 2003 and spent 5 months fully renovating and converting it into something almost unrecognisable! It was one of the most challenging projects we'd taken on - everything had to be done to this property and we needed to come up with some imaginative ideas to make the most of the space and to bring natural light into a building that had hardly seen any for decades! We managed to maintain the integrity of the building, preserving all the original features, changing layouts, installing a state of the art heating system, double glazing and adding some stylish contemporary finishes. It now has a neutral and calm interior design style with some jaunty nautical touches using seagrass wallpaper, coir matting, stripy fabrics and some reclaimed sailing artefacts. It has lots of light and has been finished to high standards throughout.

We sold the finished house to Tracy and Steve, our friends from Newcastle in the summer of 2004 and have been filling it ever since with guests from all over the world. Everyone seems to love this quirky character cottage and many of our guests come back for a second and third time!
It is one of our most popular cottages and it is easy to see why.

GUESTS COMMENTS
'Steve and I had a great stay in the Fisherman's Retreat. We were both really impressed with the cottage both in terms of its design and the personal touches (wine and cake on arrival, sweets in the seashell, enough interesting reading material to sink a ship!). Also, many thanks for the folders of useful hints and tips. The 'before' and 'after' photographs of Fisherman's Retreat were really interesting to see. We'd love to come back in the New Year'......Julia Pulford, December 2006
'Thank you Fiona, we had a fabulous week and really enjoyed the cottage, it was so lovely walking into a place that was so perfect, whoever it is that cleans and presents the place does a fantastic job, several of our friends came to stay with us and like us, were very impressed with the quality of the accommodation and I am spreading the word so I will keep an eye on the new places coming joining your collection. Thanks again'...Penny Baker, May 2008

When staying at the Fisherman's Retreat, you must try to visit the Fisherman's Kitchen, just a few paces from the cottage. This is the home of Swallow Fish, the last fully operational 19th Century smoke house in Seahouses. Here, both kippers and salmon are smoked in the traditional way. The shop sells a wide selection of locally caught shellfish, fresh fish and of course, their own smoked salmon and kippers, as acclaimed by renowned BBC chef Rick Stein.
The Fisherman's Kitchen has an interesting selection of the coopering tools that were used to make the herrings barrels, as well as an impressive display of photographs depicting the history of fishing and kippering in Seahouses. Patrick, the owner and his staff will be happy to show you the smoke house and explain the processes involved. Prior arrangements are appreciated for groups. Patrick also offers a postal service for smoked fish or will vacuum pack your purchases at the end of your holiday, to keep your fish fresh on your journey home!
