Where to visit: North East Christmas Markets

Christmas Markets North East

Get into the festive spirit with a visit to one of the North East’s Christmas markets. With our Retreats at low season prices, it is an excellent time to take in a short break, a little relaxation and some shopping away from the crowded high streets.

Top of our list has to be the magical setting of The Alnwick Garden Christmas Market. Festive celebrations here are unique, as alongside the market there is ice skating, a Christmas trail around the Gardens and The Treehouse restaurant, which can only be described as like something out of a fairytale, as diners are treated to sumptuous locally-sourced food within the branches of an actual treehouse. The market, with its gifts, festive nibbles and live carols, runs on the following dates; November 26-27, December 3-4, 10-11 and 17-22.

Christmas Markets North East

Further north is Berwick Christmas Market on Sunday, December 11. Our Waterfront Retreat is ideally positioned to enjoy this event at Berwick Town Hall. You’ll find plenty of stalls, refreshments and even a visit from Santa.

Slightly further from most of our Northumberland Retreats, but well worth a day trip, is Newcastle’s International Christmas Market and Durham’s Christmas Festival. The International Market, until December 11, brings together gourmet food from across Europe so you’ll be able to tuck into crepes, waffles, paella and currywurst.

Durham is our second favourite market as you’ll not only find regional produce, crafts and gifts, but the festival is in and around the cathedral, castle and city centre so you get the opportunity to discover the city’s major attractions at the same time. Children are catered for too with a lantern procession, static falconry display and children’s entertainers. This event runs from December 2-4.
