Our family holiday cottages

Design-led family holiday cottages throughout Northumberland and the North East

At Coastal Retreats we pride ourselves on being family-friendly and it was our desire to enjoy luxury, design-led holidays with our own children that spurred us on to create our own collection of style-inspired holiday properties, which both adults and children could enjoy. Places where children can play happily, teenagers can enjoy some freedom and where parents can snatch some peace and relaxation. Our award-winning family friendly accommodation, recognised by Family Traveller, allows you to experience the best of what Northumberland has to offer from its miles of sandy beaches, its iconic castles and its nature-rich islands.

Our family Retreats

Our family friendly holiday cottages range from laid back Retreats to luxury houses. Whether you are looking for a memorable school holiday getaway, a baby or toddler friendly escape or a big family, multi-generational get together, our largest houses sleep up to 12 or several of our cottages are in the same location with the potential to sleep up to 54 guests. Children and babies are welcome at all of our holiday homes, with our child friendly rating system of 1-5 directing you to the most appropriate choices. We can always provide a complimentary travel cot and high chair for use during your stay and some of our most family-friendly friendly cottages have games rooms, toys, dressing up boxes, play gardens and specially designed children’s bedrooms.

Family Retreats by the beach

Days spent together on the beach are often those that your children will not forget. Choose a holiday house near the beach and you have hours of ready-made entertainment on your doorstep. At Mr & Mrs Smith’s (sleeps six) or Bamburgh Beach House (sleeps eight), you are just a short walk across the dunes to Bamburgh Beach. Both of these beach houses are seaside holidaying at its best with spacious gardens for those rare occasions when you may get tired of the sand! For a true on-the-beach experience, Beadnell Beach House (sleeps 10/12) has steps from its outdoor terrace onto Smuggler’s Cove beach and flexible bed options in its four bedrooms. In walking distance of Beadnell Bay for watersports, paddling and building sandcastles is Shoreline (sleeps eight) and The Deck House (sleeps seven). Shoreline has an excellent enclosed garden with a swing for younger children, plus a snug room for older children to hang out. If booked with adjacent Duneside House, they can accommodate up to 18 guests.

Family Retreats with games rooms or gardens

Whatever the weather, Bamburgh Coach House’s games room makes a perfect hideout for little and big kids. A self-contained outbuilding, overlooked from the main house, it is heated for colder days and has floor to ceiling windows and doors, which can be thrown open in the summer months. There’s table tennis, table football and a wide range of toys to keep the children amused. Add in the sun-exposed garden and the flexibility of the second bedroom and this family-friendly house for five just outside of Bamburgh is a fantastic base to retreat to. Group getaways High Mill (sleeps 10), Moo House (sleeps 12) and North Star House (sleeps 12) all lend themselves to family gatherings with their spacious living areas, ample outdoor space and games rooms. In fact Moo House’s Cow Shed is more than just a games room. In a separate building from the main house, it is a fantastic fun space to watch movies, play games, read and hang out. It has a small pool table, table football, air hockey, TV and books, and the fun doesn’t stop there – there is also a play garden to the rear with swings, a sand pit, table tennis and a football goal. If it is outdoor space you’re after then Garden Cottage is pretty hard to beat. It boasts two gardens; one to the rear and one at the front of the house, so you’ll never have to miss out on the sunshine. At the back, there’s a Wendy house, swings and toys for the children and some beautiful views of the countryside. Sleeping six, this Retreat scores highly for children and families.

All round family friendly cottages

For the right balance of child-friendly features and luxury touches the adults will love, you can’t beat Seasalt, Driftwood and Nook End. These former farm worker’s cottages just outside of Beadnell sleep up to six guests each and can be booked together for multi-family stay. There’s a generous supply of toys and books, funky bunk beds, highchairs and travel cots, proper kids’ crockery and cutlery, and a trampoline, football goal, table tennis and Wendy House in the communal garden. For adults there’s log burning fires and a fabulous garden pod for drinks while the sun goes down. Similarly, there are some lovely design elements appealing to the grown ups at The Apple Store (sleeps 7), which are combined with an excellent family bedroom with a bunk bed for three and a garden with children’s play equipment. If your family includes the pet dog, The Smithy (sleeps 5) is ideal with its numerous walks from the cottage door, garden with Wendy House and swing and a large log burner set in its original stone fireplace.
