Our pick of the cottages with the best sky views

Published: Thursday 22nd Sep 2016

If you fancy a spot of star gazing near to home, then why not try Northumberland? This county offers the darkest skies in the UK, greatly enhancing your chances of catching a sight of the Northern Lights. Make a trip to this Northern land and be truly blessed by awe-inspiring vistas with very little light pollution.

Our best cottages with amazing sky views:

skyfall

Skyfall

We couldn’t have a list of our best cottages with amazing sky views without including Skyfall. Situated on the former Glororum farm steading in Bamburgh it is set aside from the main village and is therefore well-placed to take advantage of moonlit nights unhindered by lights from restaurants, pubs and street lights. From the generous-sized rear glass balcony take the opportunity to star gaze, watch the sun rise and fall and witness nature at work as the weather changes. The sky appears to go on forever here, so if you enjoy a feeling of spaciousness, then Skyfall is the place for you.

north star house

North Star House

Lured back time and time again to this area by the vast Northumberland skies with their endless sea of stars, Coastal Retreats guests turned owners bought this stone house and converted it into the grand property it is today. With the benefit of having holidayed in this location they added doors with garden views to the living room to maximise the view and constructed a balcony off the master bedroom – perfect for astronomical pursuits. The rear of the house overlooks open fields and its situation on the edge of Bamburgh village means it benefits from being near to all the facilities but secluded enough to catch some amazing night sky activity.

rosebud

Rosebud

Situated just outside of the Northumberland National Park, Rosebud is our closest cottage to this unique dark sky park. Views of the stars here are exceptional from both the front and back gardens, and the village of Wooler – reputably a great spot for stargazing – is just a short drive away. Rosebud is a great place to reconnect with nature and enjoy the peace and quiet of the tranquil surroundings.

outdoor at tweedswood

Tweedswood

Set in the secluded location of Redpath near Melrose on the Scottish Borders, Tweedswood is a rural idyll with some undisturbed views. Sit in the generous garden with a glass of Champagne and watch the sun go down or take in one of the numerous walks from the cottage door and enjoy the blue skies over the rolling hills and fields.
