Spa and Leisure

The Ocean Club

From a relaxing swim to an Ocean Spray Facial, you’ll feel rejuvenated after a visit to the Ocean Club in Seahouses.

The majority of our Northumberland Retreats come with guest membership to this members-only private leisure club in Seahouses (exceptions are Waterfront and Tweedswood in The Borders, Quayside and The Nelson in Amble and The Old Paper Mill  and Number Nine in County Durham).

There is a small admission charge of £8 for adults, £4.20 for children and free for under 2s. With our partner offers you can also enjoy a free child swim (with a paying adult) or a free fitness class. For access to the club, please show your Coastal Retreats cottage booking confirmation on arrival. The code for the Ocean Club car park can be found in your arrival details.

You’ll find a 20-metre pool, a children’s pool, fitness studio, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. All great activities when the weather is poor, and you want to get out of the rain. Click here for the pool timetable.

The beauty treatment packages range from its signature hot stone therapy, Ocean Spray Facial or various types of massage. Marine technologists Thalgo and Espa are the treatment products used at this coastal spa.

There is a licensed coffee shop on site serving a range of snacks, hot drinks, wine, beer and pizzas to eat in or take away.

Public Swimming Pools

There are public swimming pools in Alnwick and Berwick. Both have a main pool and a children’s pool, and Berwick has a wave machine, water slide and an ice rink. Ice skating is available from April to September.

Sports Activites

Whether you are looking for some adventure with a spot of kitesurfing or stand-up paddle boarding, or just want to take a relaxing bike ride along the Northumberland coastal route, let us help you organise the right sporting activity for your holiday.

Beadnell Bay and Bamburgh beach are great spots for watersports and there you can enjoy kitesurfing, coasteering, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing and sea kayaking. Try Kevin Anderson for lessons and equipment hire or Northside Surf School.

From family-friendly routes to off-road trails, Northumberland is a fantastic place to explore by bike. There are several long-distance trails that you can also cycle including: Hadrian’s Cycleway, The Coast & Castles, Pennine Cycleway, and the UK’s most popular route, the Sea to Sea (C2C). To help you plan your routes and find bike hire places near your Retreat, visit Cycle Pad.

What better way to enjoy the Northumberland coast and countryside with a horseback ride along Bamburgh beach or a trek through the Cheviot Hills. For beach rides try Slate Hall Riding Centre and Kimmerston Riding Centre for both coast and country rides.

The North East is most famous for the Great North Run in Newcastle, which many of our guests have taken part in and then combined with a holiday in Northumberland. For dedicated runners there are also numerous 10k, half and full marathons which take in the castles, coastline and landscape of the county. See Run Nation or Endurance Life for more details. Outside of challenge events, guests looking to take in a run while they are holidaying can head to Beadnell Bay where there is a group of informal runners which meet every Saturday morning in the beach car park at 9am. See the Beadnell Beach Run Facebook page for information. Or the Seahouses Striders running club meets on Monday evening at 6pm outside of Physicality in Main Street, North Sunderland.

Be inspired by our round up of our Best Luxury Retreats near Golf Courses in what is one of the most popular regions for this sport. These apartments and houses are all close to, and some within putting distance, of spectacular golf courses, and make great post play hangouts.

Walk in the footsteps of kings and knights and tread the paths of our Stone Age and Roman ancestors. See parts of Northumberland inaccessible by car and capture some of its iconic spots in different lights and from unusual angles. To really experience this vast, wild and seductively beautiful county, there’s no better way to do it than by foot. See our list of suggested walks here.
