Things to Do in Lanchester

As a country steeped in industrial history, Durham has many museums and attractions, none more popular or more fun than Beamish. Beamish is a living history museum designed to bring northern Victorian society to life and is just a short 15 minute drive from Lanchester. Beamish is a fully functioning town complete with a school, various shops, a pub and even a mine that would have once supported a town such as this. The museum has various actors and live recreations set in the 1800s, 1920s, 1940s and 1950s, so is a real through-time treat for the whole family.

Lanchester is close to a lovely farm shop, the Knitsley Farm Shop and Cafe.  Located in the village of Consett, which is a very short drive down the road or an hour’s walk away, the farm shop is a great place to visit if you want to enjoy a relaxed day out and stay local. Not only do they sell a vast range of local produce, baked goods and wines, but the Granary Cafe on site serves up some really tasty meals for you to enjoy with a hot drink.

There is also the local Lanchester Village walk that runs along the old Consett to Durham railway tracks and takes around 20 minutes, eventually linking up with the Derwent Walk. With the Derwent Valley so close by, spending your time rambling along the North East countryside is never easier than when staying in Lanchester.
