Things To Do in the Area

As one of Northumberland’s most popular villages for holidaying, Craster is a traditional fishing village, famous for its smoked kippers, and home to the iconic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. The castle is free to English Heritage members and is only open certain days of the week, so it’s best to check the Dunstanburgh Castle webpage before you try to enter the site. To get to Dunstanburgh, walk along Craster’s great rockpooling shoreline – named as one of the UK’s favourite coastal walks –  from Craster’s harbour and we can guarantee you’ll be captivated, whatever time of day or season.

In the village, you’ll find a welcoming gastro pub, The Craster Arms, an art gallery, a cafe and a seafood restaurant. You simply have to try the village’s famous smokes kippers, too, which you can sample from L. Robson and Sons Butchers. The family have been making and selling the now world-famous kippers, alongside their smoked salmon, for over 100 years and their shop and restaurant is well worth a visit.

The silvery sands of Embleton Bay, arguably one of Northumberland’s most beautiful beaches, lie just beyond the castle and are home to many species of wildlife. At just under three miles away, a leisurely walk to Embleton Bay from one of our Craster cottages is the perfect way to while away a day, or a couple of days if you fall in love with the place, which we’re sure you will.
