Description

Drive past Craster's picturesque harbour and take a right at the village pub. A row of quaint whinstone cottages runs up the hill, but sneak behind them, into the driveway of Red Herring, and you'll find a spacious haven of contemporary design within a 200 year old shell - not quite what you'd be expecting.

The designer owners have immersed themselves in the character of this former school house, to bring it back to life, acknowledging original features but adding their own style print to meet their exacting demands for a holiday home. The interior remodelling reflects their awareness of light and space and their love of Craster and all things coastal. Flexible bed arrangements in the second bedroom make this house suitable for both couples or a family with children, with a log burner adding all year round appeal.

You’ll find a hint of the Nordic in Red Herring, with carefully chosen colours, unique contemporary bespoke furniture pieces handcrafted from locally sourced timber such as sycamore and elm, and the odd upcycled vintage item too.

Reviews

A lovely, comfortable, clean house in a perfect location. We felt very welcome.

Miss H,

We had a wonderful stay at Red Herring cottage. The property was perfectly located, spotlessly clean, cosy and well equipped. The welcome pack was very much appreciated as was the help of the owners in decorating the property for ours friend’s special birthday.

Mrs H,

Red Herring is situated in the beautiful harbour village of Craster. You will not find an abundance of shops, only a pub, a renowned kipper smoke house and a cafe. Craster suited us fine. Red Herring is an excellent property which has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Plenty of room for four people to comfortably sit in the evening and a well equipped kitchen to cook in. No complicated recycling either! One minor suggestion would be a shaving mirror in the family bathroom. We enjoyed our stay very much and would love to return one day. The Northumberland area is spectacular.

Ms R,

The property is very well presented in an excellent location. The property is comfortable with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The location on the costal path is ideal with great walks in all directions.

Mr Andrew H,

The property was decorated to a high standard and in a perfect location. One of our new favourites.

Mrs Lisa H,

A great cottage in a fabulous location - spotlessly clean!

Mrs Sue H,

Location

Down a lane, tucked behind Robson's smokery in the small village of Craster, just a minute's walk from the harbour, local pub, art gallery and cafe, and the seafront. Leave the car parked up and enjoy leisurely walks to Dunstanburgh Castle and Howick following the coastal footpath.
For further information on the area, see our Craster pages.
