4 Restyled Retreats for 2019

A closer look at four familiar Retreats where the owners have recently made notable or subtle upgrades.

It’s not always the newest Retreats that get us the most excited. When a cottage that has been in the collection for a while decides to restyle, it instantly feels refreshed. These four Retreats have made practical changes with some lovely modern designs which means guests have more flexible options to suit them when staying there.

The Wood Store, Tughall Steads between Newton and Beadnell

The Wood Store has undergone numerous changes over the years, but its latest kitchen transformation is perhaps its best. Previously this space had a farmhouse look, but its later styling breaks free of its past, showcasing contemporary grey cabinets instead of dark wood, instantly turning this room into a light, colourful space. Changing the positioning of the table has also created an easier flow through both in the room itself, and from the lounge and the small outdoor garden. It feels like somewhere you’d like to hang out while still keeping its functionality. Add to this a restyled family bathroom and you have a Retreat which is hot for summer and ready for the autumn and winter months.

Tweedswood, near Melrose Scottish Borders

The scenery around Tweedswood is simply too stunning not to be able to enjoy wherever you are in the cottage. When the owners decided they wanted to add an ensuite to the master bedroom so couples holidaying together could benefit from a bathroom per bedroom , they did not fail to ensure they maximised the vistas too. Truly a loo with a view! We love the clever space-saving contemporary sliding barn door which is in keeping with the character of the house.

High Mill, Tughall Steads between Newton and Beadnell

There’s no place quite like High Mill for get togethers. It has a huge garden, spacious open plan living and dining area and sleeps 10 across four bedrooms. The addition of another ensuite to make a fourth shower room in 2018 made it even more appealing for families or friends holidaying together. This year the owners have made further improvements, transforming its look with new feature wallpaper behind the inglenook fireplace. It was a subtle change but one which embraces the trend for big, dramatic wallpaper patterns and achieves the vibrancy that the owners were looking for.

The Beach Pad, Seahouses

Simple changes can make the world of difference. Owned by Coastal Retreats Director Fiona Mckeith, The Beach Pad has always been a bright spot on the Seahouses horizon. But two rooms, with king size beds limited the options for families with older children who were happy to share a room but not a bed. The introduction of a flexible zip and link option (either a twin or superking) in the second bedroom means the room can now be adapted to suit whoever is staying.
